The Sockmonkey sanctuary was founded in 1915, during the first world war. During the war, a lot of Sockmonkey’s were used for general day-day duties, cleaning theSmall Cannon Cleaned by Sockmonkeys barrels of cannons, collecting fruit and running errands, and being delivery monkeys for soldiers wishing to write letters home, or to bring urgent supplies of ammunition, morphine and bandages to the front lines.

One particular young soldier who came from a very wealthy family befriended one of the monkeys. Long days in the trenches, and hiding from enemy fire and snipers gradually took their toll. After a particular heavy night under fire and fearing his life would soon be at an end, he instructed his Sockmonkey to deliver a last ever letter home to his family, and to return to the safety of the nearest HQ. A short while later the soldier was badly wounded by gunfire and knocked unconscious, the devoted Sockmonkey dragged the soldier 15 miles back through trenches and mud to deep inside friendly lines before collapsing with exhaustion and dying. The soldier survived, although no longer able to take part in active duty- owing his life to his loyal Sockmonkey

The name of the soldier was Sir Reginald Doobbery, the heir to the Doobbery fortune and the vast Doobbery estate. Sir Reginald promised that no Sockmonkey seeking rest, peace, and relaxation or in need of a sanctuary would ever need to look any further. The Sockmonkey sanctuary was founded.

The Sockmonkey Sanctuary

Sir Reginald spent the rest of his life learning about the Sockmonkeys, their place in society, and trying to make more people aware of how to care for, and treat them right. Unfortunately despite his death in the 1950′s there are many people who still fear, or shun Sockmonkeys, and refuse to believe they can be active members of society. In our modern world people often forget the simple life of the Sockmonkey and the contribution it has made to our society, or the plight of millions of Sockmonkeys in other cultures. This is something the Sanctuary continues to strive for.
